Tribute to Prince Federico: A Hero in Life and Death

Prince Federico, the youngest son of Henri of Luxembourg and Maria Teresa of Luxembourg, passed away at the age of 22 due to a rare genetic disease called POLG, which affects cellular energy and causes dysfunction in various organs. His father described the disease as a "defective battery" that never fully recharges. In an emotional tribute, Henri of Luxembourg referred to his son as a superhero, highlighting his ability for positivity, joy, and determination.

Henri of Luxembourg confessed that his son was the strongest person he knew and that, in his last moments of life, Federico called each loved one to say goodbye. The Luxembourg royal family has expressed its commitment to continue the mission of finding therapies and cures to prevent other patients from suffering the same fate as their son, through the POLG Foundation that Federico helped establish.

Prince Federico was diagnosed with POLG at the age of 14 and fought against this uncommon disease until his passing. His departure symbolically coincided with Rare Disease Day, a date dedicated to raising awareness about these diseases and promoting research in this field. The royal family hopes that Federico's legacy will inspire future generations not to give up in the search for a cure for rare diseases.
